"Narcissistic personality disorder is just one of many types of personality disorders. Individuals with this mental disorder appear to have an inflated sense of their own importance. They may display a deep-seated need for an abundance of attention
and admiration. They may have troubled relationships with family members or friends. In addition, they may also have a lack of empathy for other other people. This individual may appear to display a very high level of self-confidence. In reality, just the opposite is true. Underneath, their behavior is motivated by a fragile self-esteem. They seldom respond well to any form of criticism no matter how slight or well-intended.
A narcissistic personality disorder causes problems in many areas of life, such as inter-relationships, work settings, school or financial affairs. People with narcissistic personality disorder may become unhappy or disappointed. This stems from feelings that they have not been given the admiration or special attention they feel they truly deserve. They may find their personal relationships unsatisfactory and change frequently. Other people may not enjoy nor want to be around them.
There are various approaches to treatment for narcissistic personality disorder. Most of the therapy is centered around individual talk sessions (psychotherapy)."
