"Often when we experience pain or trauma, we go into the "fight/flight/freeze" response. In situations where fight and flight are not options, we can freeze those painful, traumatic moments in time in order to avoid conscious awareness of them. In such a crisis, the body may sustain an injury which it is unable to process in the moment, because we are freezing that experience so that we can function. However, the tissue remembers! The traumatic event can be hidden in the tissue (fascia) and result in pain and restricted range of motion over time. In fact, tissue memory is frequently the root cause of pain. Fascia is capable of holding tissue memories.
For example, if we are rear-ended and sustain a whiplash injury, we still must get out of the car and communicate with the person who hit us in order to obtain their contact and insurance information. Meanwhile, the body just sustained an injury which it is unable to process in real time, because we are freezing that experience so that we can function. However, the tissue remembers! Later, this traumatic event hidden in the tissues may create protective tissue restrictions that keep us moving in the short term, but cause restricted range of motion and pain. In fact, tissue memory is frequently the root cause of pain.
Myofascial release is a therapeutic process that addresses tissue trauma in a different way than any other healing modality. Myofascial release allows the body to process trauma in a spiritual, physical and cognitive way."
