"Mental wellness is more important than ever. Many activities can assist your mental well-being, including therapy, exercise, eating healthy, getting outside, and spending time building community. As we gather tools for our mental wellness toolbox, we can return to them again when we start to feel mentally unwell.
Acupuncture, a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a gentle, non-verbal approach to addressing common mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression and is often used in combination to boost the effectiveness of therapy and medication.
There are a few theories on how acupuncture can manage symptoms of anxiety and depression. Acupuncture has many stress-reducing benefits leading to improved emotional regulation and boosting your overall feelings of well-being. Acupuncture may reduce anxiety symptoms and disorders by promoting a parasympathetic zone and reducing your flight-or-fight response, allowing your body to enter restoration mode and reset your nervous system. Acupuncture works with depression by stimulating areas of the body responsible for producing endorphins (your stress and pain managing hormones). Endorphins promote positive feelings and encourage mood regulation.
The following three complementary approaches to mental wellness may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by promoting mood regulation.
Acupressure for anxiety and depression
Acupressure is an alternative to acupuncture, where you massage specific areas of the body with your thumb to stimulate the acupuncture point. You can choose to massage the acupuncture point with essential oils such as lavender, jasmine, ylang ylang, or bergamot.
Liver 3- is located on your foot in-between your big toe and 2nd toe. Measure two fingers width from the area where the skin of the big toe and 2nd toe join. Use this point for depression.
Pericardium 6- is located three fingers width below your wrist. Turn your palm facing up, and measure three finger widths below your wrist crease. Locate the point in the hollow between the two tendons. Use this point for anxiety and depression."
