"Many women (and men) undergo mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery as part of their breast cancer treatment plan. Some may also require radiation treatment to the affected area, and some may require the removal of lymph nodes from the axillary (arm pit) region as well. While these treatments are very effective for addressing breast cancer, they often leave the patient with residual problems, including shoulder pain and dysfunction, severe scar tissue and soft tissue restrictions, and lymphedema.Research has shown that post-mastectomy physical therapy "widely improves" quality of life for women who undergo these types of surgical procedures. At Mobility Project Physical Therapy, physical therapists will work with you to improve your range of motion, strength, soft tissue and scar mobility, and teach you how to prevent and treat lymphedema, so that you can regain normal function, and return to living your life as normally as possible, as soon as you can."
