"Much progress has been made for civil rights in recent decades, allowing gay, lesbian and transgender people access to increased levels of safety, support and opportunities. But as we are frequently made painfully aware of in the media, homophobia and transphobia is still a pervasive problem. The majority of transgender and gender non-conforming people report experiencing various forms of harassment and discrimination in their daily lives, as just one example.
For some, the joy and relief of newfound freedoms too often mask the memories of suffering experienced as children growing up in invalidating environments. These old wounds, usually hidden from conscious awareness, continue to wreak damage throughout adulthood, causing such ailments as depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behaviors. For many, quality of life is compromised even despite having successfully come out and integrated into supportive community."
