"For decades, dentists have treated TMJ disorders by managing the symptoms using nightguards and medications accompanied by supportive modalities such as physical therapy, nutritional support, psychological counseling, massage, relaxation, biofeedback, and jaw muscle stretching; and then surgery only when additional medication and rest fail to provide relief. Such long term management is no longer necessary, because TMJ disorders are musculo-skeletal disorders, and treating them orthopedically at the source can eliminate the symptoms and prevent them from returning. When the TMJs are inflamed, joint protective oral appliances can stop the chronic bruising and thereby also the reflex hypervigilance of the jaw muscles. Once the TMJs are no longer inflamed and the bite is stable so the jaw muscles are no longer receiving signals to stay on-guard, the oral appliance can be changed to rehabilitate the muscles to acquire a state of healthy function which produces stable adaptation that is resistant to injur"
