""This presentation will review the ketogenic diet, its safety, and its use in treating obesity, diabetes, and psychiatric disorders.

The ketogenic diet has been used since the 1920's for the treatment of epilepsy, and is often effective when medications and even surgery fail to work. The ketogenic diet is known to affect the brain in many ways that may help psychiatric disorders in addition to epilepsy. It is well established that anti-epileptic medications are often useful in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, including mood and psychotic disorders, so it is reasonable to think that it might be an effective treatment for psychiatric disorders as well. Additionally, obesity and diabetes are seen at much higher rates in people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and the ketogenic diet can be used to address these two important medical issues."
