"Many relationship problems are caused by individuals who have poor interpersonal boundaries. While codependent tendencies are often the result of conflict avoidance, one aspect of this problem is a hesitancy to say what you are honestly feeling and truly want for yourself. Often an inability to establish firm boundaries is learned behavior and an adaptive response from one"s family of origin where there was an alcoholic or angry and controlling parent. Learning to establish solid boundaries requires individual therapy to identify the reasons for why it is so difficult to say no to others. People who are codependent tend to give away parts of themselves to others in order to be friendly and accommodating. When this becomes a habit in relationship you can end up feeling subjugated and controlled by others, not getting your own needs met. Learning to set appropriate boundaries is one of the primary requirements for healthy self-care. It also insures healthy and fulfilling personal relationships."
