Cancer or Covid, it's all about inflammation: Obesity and Inflammation

"According to a new study, individuals with obesity (defined as a BMI greater than 30) may not benefit as much from the COVID-19 vaccine as individuals who are not obese (BMI less than 25). The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, found that obese individuals only formed HALF the number of antibodies 7 days post-vaccination compared with individuals who were underweight or normal weight.

The CDC reports 42.5% of adult Americans are obese and 73.6% are overweight OR obese. Obesity is a major risk factor for not only contracting COVID-19 but also dying from it. What is one thing that obesity and COVID-19 have in common? Inflammation. Both obesity and COVID-19 can cause inflammation. If you"re inflamed and contract COVID, you"re just adding fuel to the inflammation fire.

As we tell all our patients, Inflammation is the cause of all disease and a common thread in our cancer patients. Individuals that are obese live in a constant state of low-grade inflammation. This low-grade, chronic inflammation can lead to a weakened immune response meaning the body can"t fight off an illness as well as it should, whether or not that is cancer or covid. According to the MD Anderson website, "the risk between obesity and cancer risk is clear". Inflammation can also lead to other concerns such as high blood pressure, build-up of plaque in the arteries. Being obese is not the only cause of inflammation; stress, poor diet, and food allergies are just a few examples of other causes of inflammation that Dr. Bye addresses as a Naturopathic oncologist.

You might be wondering what you can do to decrease inflammation to reduce the chance of covid, chronic disease, and cancer. That is where working with Dr. Bye at Journey to wellness comes in. As a naturopathic oncologist doing complementary oncology, Dr. Bye is trained to treat the root cause of disease utilizing a variety of treatments that are individualized, based on your needs. Each person and each cancer are different. Dr. Bye is a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO) and the only FABNO in SW Washington. Dr. Bye works with her cancer patients to identify causative factors, of which inflammation is common. She helps cancer patients through their treatments, tie-up circulating tumor cells to reduce the chance of metastasis, and then helps cancer patients recover from their treatment. Once patients are done with treatment and have no evidence of disease Dr. Bye works to help patients in their recovery from surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation and with protocols to reduce the chance of recurrence. For those who still have residual disease, Dr. Bye works on recovery, slowing down the cancer process and improving quality of life."
