CFS or chronic fatigue syndrome is a serious, complex disorder that impacts various body systems. Also referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID), it is characterized by unexplained extreme fatigue that may worsen with mental and physical activity and will not improve with simply resting.
Science has yet to prove the real causes of this particular medical condition. Some theories include psychological stress, viral infections, a weak immune system, hormonal imbalances, or a combination of multiple factors. Another possibility is that certain individuals are genetically predisposed to this condition. CFS can be challenging to diagnose since there are tests that can exactly conclude CFS. You might have to undergo a series of tests to rule out other medical illnesses that have the same symptoms as CFS.
CFS, though common among women in their 40s and 50s, can affect anyone. It often makes you incapable of doing anything and in some cases, you may not even be able to get out of bed. There is no cure for CFS yet, although, there have been treatment plans to alleviate the symptoms.
What Are the Signs and Symptoms of CFS?
Depending on the immunity level of an individual, the symptoms and severity of the condition of CFS may vary. Fatigue that is worse enough to impair your daily activities is one of the most common symptoms of CFS. Extreme fatigue that lasts for 24 hours after the physical or mental activity, or known as post-exertional malaise (PEM), is also one of the common symptoms of CFS.
